BHP Billiton Rock 'n' Roll Brain Blitz Presented by WorkSafe Saskatchewan
Get Active, and Party Rock the Night Away! - Report by Jennifer Buxton
The 2013 BHP Billiton Rock 'n' Roll Brain Blitz Presented by WorkSafe Saskatchewan was a great day and night on May 11, 2013!
The Blitz started off with an afternoon Community Event with Glen Suitor, sponsored by DMC Mining Services. Approximately 60 young players were taken through a Football Combine by Ignite Conditioning with the help of University of Saskatchewan Huskies, Saskatoon Hilltops, and Bryce McCall of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The event was emceed by Scott Farmer. It began with a quick pep talk by Glen Suitor, and then moved into the combine. Following this, Glen Suitor talked to the students about playing safely and with respect, which led into a pledge signing, part of Take Brain Injury Out of Play! Lunch provided by North Atlantic Potash followed. Big thanks to all those who attended, the volunteers and Glen Suitor for making it possible!
The Brain Blitz Gala at TCU Place began at 6 p.m. University of Saskatchewan Huskies and Graig Newman of the Saskatchewan Roughriders greeted guests as they arrived. The evening began with a champagne reception, sponsored by SNC Lavalin, during which attendees checked out the Silent Auction, took photos at the Photobooth, making use of the Rock 'n' Roll props, and bought some raffle tickets from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in attendance.
Wray Morrison from CKOM at Rawlco Radio, our MC for the evening, welcomed guests before a delicious dinner sponsored by AECON, was served with table wine, sponsored by WestCap Mgt. Ltd.
Emilia Becker, an 18 year old brain injury survivor, moved the audience through her story. It was a reminder that SBIA supports people through the funds raised at the Brain Blitz.
Jim Hopson, CEO of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and SBIA Honourary Spokesperson, came forward to draw for the raffle prize of two tickets to the 2013 Grey Cup in Regina, which included a weekend rental of a Land Rover, courtesy of VWAG, and additional Roughrider merchandise.
Glen Suitor, our keynote speaker, sponsored by Prairie Mobile, delivered a presentation on safety in sports focusing on Football. His message was well received, and it was great to hear his thoughts on the concussion epidemic.
The evening finished with a dance by music rock band, Nokyo. The BHP Billiton Brain Blitz Presented by WorkSafe Saskatchewan was a success, and we can't wait for next year's event!
