2012 Fall Retreat October 13-14
Regina Inn and Conference Centre, Regina SK
This year's Fall Retreat took place Saturday, October 13 & Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the Regina Inn. The Hawaiian themed event was a great time for both the Survivors and family members who attended and those who presented sessions throughout the weekend! The Fall Retreat continues to grow each year...we had 72 participants!
The weekend kicked off Saturday with registration and a wonderful meet and greet luncheon that allowed people to meet friends, new and old! After lunch, Dean Pelzer from Supported Employment delivered a session detailing what services their organization offers people and how to access them. The information he presented helped the audience gain awareness of the employment services and assistance available for people with disabilities in Regina looking to gain employment.
At the retreat, we like to offer sessions for both ABI Survivors and their caregivers. The next sessions ran simultaneously, the survivor session was delivered by Kevin Mackenzie, an internationally renowned Storyteller and the Caregivers session was facilitated by Denise Griffon, South ABI Outreach Team Member. Kevin captivated the audience with his performance style session about how everyone's life is truly a unique story and deserves to be told! Denise provided caregivers information about how to care for themselves while caring for their loved one with Acquired Brain Injury.
The fun on Saturday afternoon continued with making Hawaiian themed picture frames and a wonderful opportunity to socialize and get to know others at the Retreat. The pictures frames looked great and participants had so much fun! Later, a wonderful supper started a tropical evening social complete with Polynesian Dancers, Hawaiian games, tropical music, snacks, tropical picture booth and a great time trying new things and meeting new people!
On Sunday morning, after a wonderful breakfast, we were moved by a mother and daughter Survivor story of Hope, presented by Heather & Emilia Becker. There wasn't a dry eye in the room while this brave and inspirational team talked about the hardships they have overcome as a part of Emilia's recovery and the many positive experiences that have made their lives even more fulfilling. Truly an inspirational story of Hope!
The 2012 Fall Retreat sessions wrapped up with trying something new...Chair Yoga. The group participated in various yoga poses and relaxation exercises, the experience was added to by lots of laughs! After the Fall Retreat Farewell Luncheon, we said our goodbyes and are looking forward to getting together again next year…Overall the event was great success, thanks to all the help of volunteers, University of Regina students, wonderful presenters, staff and enthusiastic Survivors and family members who attended!
