2014 Brain Blitz Emcee is Catriona Le May Doan!

posted by SK Brain Injury    |   April 10, 2014 10:00

Unusual Pairing of Sports Legends will Share Stage in May

For Immediate Release

Saskatoon – An unlikely pairing of Hall of Fame legends will share the stage as Catriona Le May Doan joins Matt Dunigan at TCU Place in Saskatoon on Saturday, May 3.  Le May Doan, the evening’s emcee, will collaborate with the evening’s keynote, quarterback legend Dunigan, in an interview style address at the 2014 BHP Billiton Brain Blitz Gala presented by WorkSafe Saskatchewan.

Le May Doan is a two time Olympic Gold Medalist in speed skating, a five time World Champion, and one of Canada’s most successful and highly decorated athletes. Known as “the fastest woman on ice”, Le May Doan broke 13 world records, and was inducted into both the Order of Canada and the Sports Hall of Fame. In her post competition career, Le May Doan has served as an Olympic broadcaster and as Honourary Coach of Canada’s Special Olympics team.

Le May Doan’s appearance is made possible thanks to Saskatchewan Blue Cross, which recently joined SBIA as a long-term partner for Brain Injury Awareness Month in June. “We’re proud to partner with the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association to increase awareness and promote prevention of brain injuries," says Todd Peterson, VP Sales and Marketing at Saskatchewan Blue Cross. "It's shocking to realize that brain injury is so prevalent [CDC counts 1.7 million per year] and that thousands of people in Saskatchewan are currently living with a brain injury disability. Our goal for this strategic partnership is to support the improved health and wellness of Saskatchewan residents, as we've been doing for over 65 years."

BHP Billiton is once again the title sponsor for the Brain Blitz.  "At BHP Billiton, safety is a core value, which means it is at the centre of everything we do both at work and at home. We take great care to ensure that our employees go home safely to their families every day, and that they are provided with tools and knowledge to help them lead safe lives outside of work.” said Chris Ryder, Vice President Corporate Affairs at BHP Billiton Canada Inc. "The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association plays a key role in extending awareness and educating our communities about the dangers of, and potentially life altering impacts resulting from, acquired brain injury and we are extremely proud to be working with this important organization."

WorkSafe Saskatchewan is the presenting sponsor of the BHP Billiton Brain Blitz. Phil Germain, Vice President, Prevention & Employee Services said, “The impact of an injury to the individual, their families, workplace and community can be devastating, not to mention the strain these preventable injuries place on our health care system.  We are very pleased to support SBIA's efforts to reduce brain injuries and promote awareness and education in Saskatchewan.”

New Partnership with Saskatchewan Blue Cross

posted by SK Brain Injury    |   March 11, 2014 10:41

For Immediate Release

The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association (SBIA) is excited to announce that Brain Injury Awareness Month will now be powered by Saskatchewan Blue Cross.

This partnership between SBIA and Saskatchewan Blue Cross will focus on bringing brain injury prevention to the forefront throughout Brain Injury Awareness Month in June. The announcement couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time, as brain organizations around the world are celebrating Brain Awareness Week (March 10-16).

“We’re proud to partner with the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association to increase awareness and promote prevention of brain injuries," says Todd Peterson, VP Sales and Marketing at Saskatchewan Blue Cross. "It's shocking to realize that brain injury is so prevalent - that thousands of people in SK are currently living with a brain injury disability. Our goal for this strategic partnership is to support the improved health and wellness of Saskatchewan residents, as we've been doing for over 65 years."

The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association’s mandate is to prevent brain injuries through education and awareness, as well as to provide support to survivors of brain injuries and their families.

This new partnership will assist SBIA in sending educational packages to recreational centres, schools, communities and politicians with goal of educating as many people as possible about brain injuries. Prevention displays will be set up at fairs, tradeshows, arts and culture and sporting events throughout the summer.

Prevention of brain injuries in sport will be highlighted at the annual BHP Billiton Brain Blitz Gala presented by WorkSafe Saskatchewan on May 3 at TCU Place which features Matt Dunigan as the keynote speaker.  Tickets are $150 and available at www.sbia.ca/brain-blitz.aspx.

“We are getting our message out there – brain injuries are the number one killer and disabler of persons under 44. We are excited about the partnership with Saskatchewan Blue Cross. With their support we will be able to educate even more people during Brain Injury Awareness month in June,” said Glenda James, Executive Director of SBIA.

BrainLove - Media Release

posted by SK Brain Injury    |   February 13, 2014 11:03

For Immediate Release

A new kind of love is in the air, but the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association (SBIA) isn’t talking about romantic love.

BrainLove is a partnership between the provincial organization and the Saskatchewan Royal Purple Association (SRPA) to encourage the public to learn about the brain and make the health and safety of their brains a priority during Brain Awareness Month in March.

“You have only one brain and it controls ALL of the body’s functions.  Keeping it safe and healthy should be of utmost importance to everyone” says Glenda James, SBIA Executive Director.  A healthy brain begins with healthy choices at play, at work and in social activities.

The two provincial organizations are teaming up with the BrainLove campaign not only to raise awareness, but also funds for educational programs.  Glenda James, Executive Director of SBIA and Sandi Lougheed, President of the SRPA formalized the partnership recently with a contract signing and photo opportunity at the annual gathering of the Elks and Royal Purple in Saskatoon.

“Royal Purple has a long history of raising funds for educational purposes and we are thankful to be joining SBIA in our mission to educate,” said Sandi Lougheed, President of the Saskatchewan Royal Purple Association.

Beginning March 3, participating businesses around the province will be collecting donations on behalf of SBIA and SRPA. For a donation of $1 or more, customers will receive a BrainLove sticker.

The funds raised by the BrainLove Campaign are used to support those living with brain injuries and their families; as well as supporting prevention programs with the goal of reducing the incidence of brain injury.

BrainLove kicks off a busy season of activity for SBIA with the annual Spring Retreat for survivors and families at the end of March, followed by the annual BHP Billiton Brain Blitz Gala presented by Worksafe Saskatchewan on May 3 at TCU Place which features Matt Dunigan as the keynote speaker.  Tickets are $150 and available at www.sbia.ca/brain-blitz.aspx

CFL All-Star Matt Dunigan - Special Guest at Brain Injury Prevention Gala

For Immediate Release

Saskatoon – The 2014 BHP Billiton Brain Blitz presented by WorkSafe Saskatchewan takes place Saturday, May 3 at TCU Place in Saskatoon, featuring legendary quarterback and Analyst for the CFL on TSN, Matt Dunigan.  The Brain Blitz Gala is the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association’s (SBIA) largest annual fundraiser.

In 2006, Dunigan received the League’s highest honour with his induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame as well as being named as one of the TSN Top 50 CFL Players of the modern era.

A three-time CFL All-Star and five-time divisional All-Star, Dunigan won two Grey Cups – 1987 with the Edmonton Eskimos and 1991 with the Toronto Argonauts. Following a successful college career at Louisiana Tech, Dunigan played with six CFL teams throughout his professional career: Edmonton Eskimos, B.C. Lions, Toronto Argonauts, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Birmingham Barracudas, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Dunigan still holds the CFL record for total yards in a single game with 713 yards.

In an interview style format, Dunigan will share stories about his life and his football career.

"Life is full of choices - to speak or to listen, to encourage or to dishearten, to play or to watch, to love or to hate. I have chosen to speak, encourage, play and to love in the wonderful city of Saskatoon!” said Matt Dunigan, “I’m looking forward to being teammates with the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association and making a difference in the world of sport.”
