Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association Applauds SUMA Resolution

For Immediate Release
February 6, 2015

The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association applauds the resolution by SUMA to encourage the province of Saskatchewan to pass mandatory bicycle helmet legislation.

Research suggests bicycle helmet legislation increases helmet usage and decreases the risk of severe brain injury. In jurisdictions that introduced helmet legislation, helmet usage increased by 30% and the risk of severe brain injury was reduced by an estimated 45%, according to current research.

“This resolution by SUMA is an impressive demonstration of co-operation and leadership by public officials who are in the closest contact with their constituents, and therefore in a position to understand the devastation a preventable injury can cause both an individual and a family”, said Saskatchewan Brain Injury Executive Director, Glenda James. “We appreciate this support from SUMA, and we encourage the Government of Saskatchewan to enact legislation making helmet use for wheeled activities mandatory”.

Brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability among young people.

Unfortunately, the only cure for brain injury is prevention.

The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association strives to prevent brain injuries and improve the quality of life for brain injury survivors and their families.
